Wonders of the Modern World: Jaw-Dropping Infrastructures That Leave You in Awe

Tromsøysund Undewater Tunnel

The Tromsøysund Tunnel is an underwater pathway that connects Tromsø Island and the mainland in Norway. It is the first subsea tunnel in the country and spans an impressive length of 11,500 feet. The structure was opened to the public in 1994 and has since been a vital link for the residents of Tromsø Island.

The tunnel is anything but ordinary, being 335 feet below sea level. It was created because the former route was regularly congested due to the presence of two primary traffic sources along the way—the University of Tromsø and the University Hospital of North Norway.
