Wonders of the Modern World: Jaw-Dropping Infrastructures That Leave You in Awe
Heated Streets In Holland
Downtown Holland in Michigan has been enjoying snow-free streets and sidewalks since 1988, thanks to the innovative Holland BPW snowmelt system. The system captures waste heat from power generation to heat water, circulated through 190 miles of tubing under the pavement and sidewalks. It can melt about an inch of snow per hour and eliminates the need for plowing.
Today, the invention covers approximately 690,000 square feet of heated sidewalks and streets and is the most extensive publicly-owned snowmelt apparatus in North America. At present, it is being managed by the Holland Board of Public Works in partnership with the Holland Energy Park.
