Wonders of the Modern World: Jaw-Dropping Infrastructures That Leave You in Awe

The Harmonic Absorber

The harmonic absorber, also known as a tuned mass damper, has been installed in numerous tall buildings worldwide after being first used in the Taipei 101 Skyscraper. Tall buildings can sway during high winds or earthquakes, which can make people inside feel dizzy or nauseous. And the purpose of the tuned mass damper is to reduce unfavorable mechanical vibrations caused by moving parts.

Harmonic absorbers of different types can also be found in power transmission plants and large vehicles. They work by using a mass suspended in the building and tuned to its natural frequency to counteract the structure’s movements and reduce the sway.
