Wonders of the Modern World: Jaw-Dropping Infrastructures That Leave You in Awe
France’s Millau Viaduct
Located in southern France, Viaduc de Millau (the Millau Viaduct) is the world’s tallest cable-stayed bridge and a marvel of modern engineering. This structure is perched high above the clouds and has a height of 1,104 feet, making it even taller than the Eiffel Tower. It was built between 2001 and 2004 and spans 1.6 miles across the Tarn River Valley.
Designed by Sir Norman Foster, the viaduct has seven pillars supporting its roadway, which appears to float above the valley below. The International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) awarded the flyover with the Outstanding Structure Award in 2006, adding to its long list of accolades.
