Who’s a Good Boy?, NYC – 1980s
Because of the spike in underground crimes, New York City began employing police dogs on the stations like this one. The Philadelphia police suggested the idea to the New York Police Department. Although there were concerns raised about it, the animal watchers did start looking for the bad guys in December 1990, which also helped stop people from defacing public properties.
The first two patrol dogs were German Shepherds named Red and Suzy. While the mayor liked the idea, this program ended a couple of months later because of its high cost. The animals also couldn’t snoop on the tracks where the unused subway cars were parked.
