A sense of alertness and grief swallowed this man after hearing a rumble nearby. It may be shocking to witness a crime, but it was, unfortunately, an ordinary happening at the time, especially underground.
Evening riders were most likely to be victimized by the bad guys hiding in the subway, so Mayor Ed Koch had the transit personnel man the trains at night. The officials also saw to it that cars were filled to avoid passengers from riding alone. Although the effort made criminals think twice before committing a bad deed, this program was eventually scrapped due to budget concerns.
