The Pseudo Teeth of Geese

Not many people have seen geese look this scary. The waterbirds belong to the family Anatidae and are well known for their distinctive honking call. Despite being called teeth, geese do not have actual mouth dentition. Instead, they have pseudo teeth, which are small, serrated ridges on the upper and lower mandibles of their beaks.

These pseudo teeth, called tomium, allow geese to grip their food and hold it in place while they swallow. Scientists believe that birds used to have teeth millions of years ago but have since evolved or bred them out. And while the tomium is not as tough as real teeth, it can still do damage.
