The Silkie chicken looks like it has on an Ushanka‒a traditional Russian fur hat. But that’s not the only fascinating thing about this bird. It is also one of the world’s oldest known domesticated chicken breeds, thought to have existed as far back as the 13th century.

Its wonderfully soft plumage lacks the traditional barbs that regular feathers possess. And drawbacks include an inability to fly or adapt well to wet environments. They also have black skin, bones, and turquoise earlobes. And though they have a low egg production rate, they make up for it with an average lifespan of seven to nine years.
