The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind
Red-Lipped Batfish
The distinctive red lips of the Red-lipped Batfish are its most unique feature. But it also displays rather odd behavior for a fish. For one, it’s not a good swimmer. Instead, it prefers to live on the sandy seabed, walking across the ocean floor with its highly modified pectoral fins.
It also relies on camouflage, its sharp dorsal fins, and the fleshy illicium on its head to help lure prey. And it feeds on little fish, shrimps, and mollusks. The unusual-looking creature is native to the islands of Galapagos and Peru, and it can be found in depths ranging from 15 to 100+ meters.
