The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind
Hammer-Headed Bat
The Hammer-headed bat also goes by hammerhead bat and big-lipped bat. And each name is an attempt to describe its startling features. But as scary-looking as it may appear, it is simply a well-mannered herbivore with a lifespan of 30 years.
As the largest in Africa, the bat can be found in humid habitats such as swamps, rivers, and mangroves. Males also tend to be much larger than females, with big, elongated heads like the one in the photo. Though this mammal is a suspected carrier of the Ebola virus, scientists have yet to determine whether it can transmit the infection to humans.
