The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind

Lowland Streaked Tenrec

There’s spiky hair on a bad-hair day, and then there’s the Lowland Streaked Tenrec. The tiny creature is also known as Hemicentetes semispinosus and belongs to the Tenrecidae family. It also has a diet that consists of earthworms, grub, and the occasional insect. And it can be found in the tropical lowland forests of Madagascar.

The tenrec has such vibrant yellow and black coloring. And ordinarily, that should limit its ability to mask its location. But the collection of barbed quills on its body serves as a deterrent to most predators while also functioning as a specialized communication device, making it the only mammal in existence with that ability.
