In her 50-year Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe laden career, no role has set Bette Midler apart quite like playing Winifred Sanderson in the movie Hocus Pocus. Sure she starred in the First Wives Club and received an Oscar nomination for her role in 1979s The Rose.
But as Sanderson, she defined what it meant to become the character. It’s not so much that you didn’t recognize her, but she embodied the character so much that she actually became recognized as the character. Midler has also pointed out that Sanderson is her favorite role, and even dressed as the character for Halloween 2016.
