A Photographer Stepped Into a Neglected Home to Show Us a Unique Piece of American History
Traces of a Dark Past?
As a centuries-old farmhouse, Marion Carll’s residence witnessed its fair share of dark moments. While we’re trying to focus on the positive side of history, these corridors were likely used to accommodate slaves in the early days of the 19th century.
Keep in mind, slavery was only abolished in the United States in 1865, long after the farmhouse was first established. During Carll’s lifetime, though, these now eroded corridors were probably home to the household staff. Servants were a big part of Victorian-era society, and millions were employed in domestic service all across Britain and the United States.
