One of the most resounding explanations is that the user could only see the unidentified mass because Google Maps censored it.
There’s even a subreddit dedicated to the places censored on Google Maps and Earth, including the Michael Aaf building in Utah, the Minami Torishima Airport on Marcus Island in Japan, and the Szazhalombatta oil refinery in Hungary, according to The Things.
