Australia – Black Box (Flight Recorder)

A flight recorder often referred to as the “black box,” is a technology that’s extremely useful in preventing future aircraft accidents. Despite the name, the device is painted bright orange. It was originally the Australian scientist David Warren who had the idea for the black box.

Being the research scientist at the Aeronautical Research Laboratory, Warren got tasked to investigate the mysterious crash of the Comet, the world’s first jet-powered commercial aircraft. The scientist thought building a device capable of recording voices and sounds in the cockpit, and primary flight data would assist in investigating flight crashes.
