Wonders of the Modern World: Jaw-Dropping Infrastructures That Leave You in Awe

Fishway Ladders

Migrations up and down rivers are critical for the survival of many fish species. In the areas surrounding natural impediments like waterfalls, dams, and streams, structures known as fishway streams are built to help fish overcome these barriers. The design of these structures, which looks like a ladder, facilitates their movement—particularly salmon—between streams.

The primary consideration in building such infrastructure is the survival of the fish by providing a detour route past obstructions. The Pawtuxet Falls Dam in Rhode Island was the first location where this design was used, and it has undergone several modifications based on feedback since its introduction.
