Wonders of the Modern World: Jaw-Dropping Infrastructures That Leave You in Awe

The Delta Works

The Netherlands’ Delta Works, one of the Seven Modern World Wonders, consists of 13 buildings and is the world’s most comprehensive storm surge barrier. The American Society of Civil Engineers has bestowed that title upon it. According to reports, the works will only start functioning when the water level rises to around ten feet higher than the standard seal height.

The project took almost 40 years to complete, and it was finished in 1997. But in 2012, some more work made the total cost of the project estimated to be around $13 billion, making it one of the most expensive engineering projects in history.
