Wonders of the Modern World: Jaw-Dropping Infrastructures That Leave You in Awe

Houtribdijk Dam

Spanning 18.6 miles, the Houtribdijk Dam is a unique infrastructure project that connects the cities of Enkhuizen and Lelystad in the Netherlands. Completed in 1975 after a decade of construction, the infrastructure has two functions: it serves as a dike to prevent flooding from the Ijsselmeer lake and as a highway to connect the two cities.

What makes it particularly interesting is that it was constructed on sand instead of traditional clay or rock, making it the longest sand dam in the world. The construction has since become an essential route for traffic and a popular location for recreational activities, such as cycling and walking.
