The Golden Age Of Graffiti, NYC – 1970s
The ’70s and ’80s may have seen the rise of self-expression through art, but it was also when crime rates went through the roof. New York then was nothing like what we have now as it was reeling from a recession. These gentlemen might be on their way to work or were tasked to spot culprits in an already graffiti-covered train.
Writings on walls and trains were then considered so much of a nuisance that David and Roger Smith, collectively called Sane Smith, were sued for $3 million for their Brooklyn Bridge mural painting. Despite the crackdown on graffiti artists, many still flourished, including Lady Pink and TAKI 183.
