Unflattering And Intense Nature Photos Guaranteed To Give You The Chills

The Entrance to Hell Is in Hawaii

These twisted lava formations in Hawaii are a strange and eerie natural phenomenon. The photo, taken in 1996 by Laszlo Kestay, shows a researcher standing over the West Kamokuna skylight, which resembles the gates of hell—we assume. The formations result from different magma flows that have dripped into a lava skylight.

That phenomenon is created when molten magma travels through channels called lava tubes, and part of the roof collapses, revealing the underground network. The heat loss around the skylight causes the hot liquid to form a crust around it. The bizarre lava formations serve as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature.
