Specialized Teeth of the Crabeater Seals

Crabeater seals are a type of seal found in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. Their primary food source is the Antarctic krill, not crabs, as their name suggests. More accurately referred to as the krill-eater seal, these mammals are the most abundant of their species in the world, with an estimated population of around 75 million individuals.

Although they won’t pass for a toothpaste ad, the unique dentition on these seals is adapted to filter their food from the water. But while they are specialized krill hunters, they are also known to be preyed upon by leopard seals and orcas.
