The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind

Star-Nosed Mole

The star-nosed mole does, in fact, have a nose shaped like a star. But wait till you find out that it’s also one of two mammals with the ability to smell underwater, and it performs this feat by rapidly exhaling and inhaling bubbles to pick up odor molecules in the water.

The mole makes its home in the marshes, swamps, and other moist areas of North America, and because it’s virtually blind, the nose serves as its primary sensory organ. And thanks to the highly-efficient receptors in the star, it can consume food in less than two-tenths of a second, making it one of the fastest-eating mammals on earth.
