The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind
Ocean Sunfish
The ocean sunfish, commonly known as Mola mola, is the heaviest bony fish in the world. It can grow over ten feet long and weighs about 2,000 pounds on average. Its spinal column is also designed with very few vertebrae leaving its skeleton with mostly cartilaginous material.
The fish’s diet consists of jellyfish, squids, eelgrass, and crustaceans. Its teeth are also fused into a beak-like structure, and instead of scales, it has thick rubbery skin covered in mucus. The average female is able to produce as many as 300 million eggs at once, making it the most prolific egg layer among known vertebrates.
