The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind

Pinocchio Frog

Not all animal species are actively sought after. And the Pinocchio frog belongs on the list of those uncovered accidentally. In 2008, famous herpetologist Paul Oliver was on a field expedition in the Foja Mountains of Indonesia when he spotted this unique frog. And in 2019, it was described as Litoria Pinocchio.

Like the fictional character, this amphibian has a long, spiky snout. And though the use of this unique adaptation is unknown, scientists have determined that it can be a good indicator of mood. For example, the nose tips up when the frog vocalizes. But when silent, it points down, implying that it’s calm.
