A ‘Crowning’ Moment

It’s hard to make something out of this image at first glance, but if you take a good look, you’ll realize that those are happy people inside the Statue of Liberty’s crown. At the time, tourists were still allowed inside the monument until one fateful day in 1916 when Germany bombed Black Tom Island.

A series of explosions resulted in at least six deaths. It also sent shock waves in the New Jersey area as well as the New York Harbor. As for the Statue of Liberty, it suffered damages amounting to $100K from the shrapnel.
