Ever Wondered How Life Was Back in the Day? These Vintage Images Show How Drastically the World Has Changed

Recess for Shoeshine Boys

It may seem inconceivable today, but decades ago, hundreds of shoe-shine boys roamed the streets of New York, waiting for customers who wanted their footwear cleaned for a few cents. At the time, this was their source of income, especially those whose families struggled financially.

These boys were enjoying their break from waxing and buffing their clients’ leather footwear. Photographer Stanley Kubrick captured the image of a 12-year-old child named Mickey in Brooklyn, who entered this job to support his big family of nine siblings. He followed the little one as he accomplished his chores while having fun.
