A Photographer Stepped Into a Neglected Home to Show Us a Unique Piece of American History

The Ancestors of a Great American Symbol Lived There

According to a 1698 deed of record, the site of Marion Carll’s Farmhouse once belonged to John Skidmore and John Whitman; the latter is the great-great-grandfather of the legendary American poet Walt Whitman. They were the first white men to own the parcel of land.

The great Walt Whitman was born in 1819 and was known for the humanism and realism of his poetic work, which inspired countless literary figures throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. A modernist poet named Ezra Pound once said that more than being “America’s poet,” Whitman was America.
