Youngster Art Collector Acquires Painting At Cheap Auction, Later Finds Out Its Real Worth
The Roadshow’s Origins Go Way Back
Antiques Roadshow traces its roots back to England, way back in 1979. It started airing on BBC and was based on a 1977 documentary about a London auction house touring England’s West Country. It set a precedent for shows to come and has spawned several incarnations in many countries, including Canada, Germany, Belgium, and Australia, among a few others. Each country had its own team of appraisers.
The brand has also branched out into special episodes, and at one point, there was also an Antiques Roadshow Magazine. In 2008, an Angel of the North sculpture by Antony Gormley became the most expensive item ever evaluated, valued at £1 million.
