The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plan

In Nevada’s Tonopah, the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project features a two-mile tower formed by 10,000 mirrors twisted into a spiral. It was built in the ’60s and was the first solar power plant with a central receiver building and energy storage. Its capacity and energy storage were designed to power over 75,000 homes.

Unfortunately, the facility couldn’t sustain itself and didn’t generate solar power for several years. However, Tonopah Solar Energy expressed optimism about restarting the Crescent Dunes plant by the end of 2020 during its bankruptcy proceedings. In July 2021, the project resumed production for NV Energy after the company Cobra took over operational control.
