New York’s subway system in the ’70s and ’80s was scary, being one of the most dangerous places back then. The number of crimes kept ballooning behind the glitz and glamour, no thanks to the economic crisis that left citizens desperate. Violence was especially widespread underground—in the subway, of course.

Men in uniform patrolled the subway to reduce crime. Still, the rate of violent occurrences in the city’s subway got so high by 1980 that the NYPD enlisted over 2,300 police officers to patrol the system day in and day out.
