At first glance, people may laugh at these muscular men standing by the door of a subway car, but they were a part of the Guardian Angels, a group of volunteers in the ’70s and ’80s, which aimed to help reduce the crime in New York City.

These heaven-sent and dedicated individuals roamed around the subways without any weapon to stop violence-related activities. Their role was particularly important for the citizens riding the subway because the police force was downsized due to the fiscal crisis. The economic problem had also led some people to turn to crime, stealing quick cash.
