Rare Sighting of a Flying Fox Bat

These giant bats, with wingspans reaching five to six feet, are not often seen outside Australia, where they are endemic. Despite their imposing appearance, they do not pose much of a threat to humans. The flying foxes, named for their fox-like heads, are primarily vegetarian, subsisting on fruit and nectar.

Despite being among the largest bats in the world, these winged creatures are elusive. They sleep in remote caves, which makes sightings rare. But their vegetarian diet makes them beneficial to the ecosystem. Unfortunately, these unique species are endangered and at risk of extinction. According to Animals Australia, their population has declined by 95% in the last century.
