A report from the Administration of Aging states that almost 30%, i.e., about 11 million of the elderly population, live alone without a partner or a blood relative. Nearly five million of them direly require assisted living or some level of constant support.
A house is full of hazards for children and the elderly alike. Falling off of stairs or slipping on a tiled floor are some grave threats to most old people with brittle bones and various nervous/orthopedic ailments. Probably Joyce felt susceptible to all these dangers and was therefore so willing to move.
