The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind
Umbonia Spinosa
Anyone familiar with the Harry Potter films or book series would agree that the name of this uncommon insect sounds like a spell. But if calling it Umbonia Spinosa would be too much trouble, it also answers to thorn-bug or treehopper.
The vibrant helmet on its head sets it apart from the 3,200 treehopper species across the globe. But the most peculiar characteristic of this winged animal is its unique relationship with ants. It gets its nutrients by sucking the sap out of plants, and this causes it to produce sugary excrement called honeydew. And because ants enjoy consuming that honeydew, they are often overly protective of this insect.
