The Blue Dragon and 39 Other Bizarre Creatures That Will Blow Your Mind

Saiga Antelope

The Saiga antelope is a nomadic herding species that once occupied the whole of Asia and Europe. The curvature and bulbous nature of the nose is the result of adaptation, allowing it to filter out dust during dry seasons. And because it can withstand many extremes, the Saiga could migrate over distances of 1,000 kilometers between seasons.

But that was in the past before its numbers began plummeting. Now, the global population has declined from millions to just thousands. And in 2015, a bacterial disease wiped out over 80% of the herd in Kazakhstan within three weeks, setting the specie on the verge of extinction.
