The royal family traditionally all get together for Christmas at the Queen’s Sandringham estate located in Norfolk. This custom is said to date from the early 20th century, and it is still preserved today with several other traditional customs. The queen reportedly goes back to her estate several days early to prepare.
On Christmas Eve, everybody sits down and the whole family dines together, but not before they weigh themselves! According to Ingrid Seward, the royal biographer, every member present needs to step on the scales. This tradition dates back to King Edward VII and his concerns about people eating enough, so weight gain is expected.
