While Markle has made waves for being an American of mixed race in the royal family, she isn’t the first American to become a princess of a European country. But in the case of the first American princess, it was a principality she held domain over.
Grace Kelly became the Princess of Monaco when she married Prince Rainier III in April 1956. Ironically, Kelly was also an actress, whose big break had just started and she had won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Actress. Kelly retired at 26 to marry her husband. She passed away in 1982 from injuries sustained in a car crash.
