The Great Stanford Tree
The Stanford Tree, the Cardinals’ hidden mascot, is chosen through a difficult procedure that only a few people would want to go through. Former Trees, present Trees, and, surprisingly, even the Stanford band are all involved in the two-week-long mascot selection process.
In order to prove that they are “Tree-worthy,” students must do some stunts but must remember three rules: do not go to jail, do not go to the hospital, and don’t light yourself on fire. The process involves bizarre activities that are short of being punishment for the participants. For instance, some past aspirants allegedly drank their own blood, bit a live snake’s head off, covered their back with leeches, and even more unthinkable acts.
