Dusty Springfield is an icon of British music. Famous for songs like Son Of A Preacher Man, Springfield had six top 20 singles on the US Billboard chart and 16 on the UK charts, making her one of the most successful British musical acts of the era.
But her fear of being exposed as gay and losing her career may have been the driving force to her alcohol and drug addiction issues. Springfield did have a few publicly recognized relationships with women, most notably with fellow singer Norma Tanega. She died in 1999 due to cancer.
