Walter “Buck” Swords was the diner who other servers at Luby’s had tagged as difficult. The 89-year-old World War II veteran came into the eatery every day and he had the attitude of a grumpy old man. With a reputation like that, it was understandable that the servers always preferred to avoid waiting at his table.
While Salazar was still new, they passed on the task of waiting his table to her. It was like a tough rite of passage for the new girl but they already prepared her with a warning about his attitude. She became worried about approaching this customer because of their warnings but she had no choice.
