As people kept talking about Arby’s, they also continued to talk about veterans. Because of Mr. Doug’s inspiring story, many started paying more attention to the federal holiday in November—Veterans Day. Although this holiday has existed for some time, it felt brand new after the events that unfolded at Arby’s.
It was also one of the few times that people stopped confusing Veterans Day with Memorial Day, which celebrates the soldiers who died in battle or due to wounds incurred in battle. Veteran’s day was more specific to war heroes who had made it back alive and it became apparent that Mr. Doug wasn’t the only one with a story.
