Johnny Mathis began his career singing at clubs in San Francisco, and his 1956 first album, “Johnny Mathis: A New Sound In Popular Song,” didn’t really connect with audiences. However, a string of hit singles like “Wonderful! Wonderful!” and “It’s Not for Me to Say” blew up, pushing him into the limelight.
Mathis’ compilation album “Johnny’s Greatest Hits” was released in 1958, and it spent 490 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 album chart. That same year, his song “A Certain Smile” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Throughout the ’00s, he continued to perform, and in 2016, he played to a sold-out audience.
