The biographical drama Elizabeth dramatized the early years of the reign of Elizabeth I. Cate Blanchett played the role of Elizabeth who took to the throne following her half sister’s death. Mary I, her half-sister, had actually imprisoned Elizabeth and taking the throne only exposed her to threats and plots against her life.
Blanchett’s performance earned her international accolade and she won several awards for the role as well. The film received seven nominations at the Academy Awards and ultimately earned the Best Makeup win. Blanchett reprised the role in the 2007 sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
