John Hurt As Joseph Merrick In The Elephant Man
John Hurt was cast to play a heavily disfigured man named Joseph Merrick in the movie, The Elephant Man. Merrick suffered years of ridicule from the public who viewed him as a freak. Joseph was later rescued by a Victoria surgeon, Dr. Fredric Treves.
John Hurt, who was regarded as one of Britain’s best actors, died at the age of 77 on January 25, 2017. Hurt had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years earlier. He had been the patron of Ethiopia’s Project Harar, a charitable institution caring for kids with facial disfigurements.
